About us

Chequer Inn Ash Society Limited rescued a much-loved heritage building and valuable amenity for the community.

As a Community Benefit Society with almost 300 members, we raised the necessary funds to purchase The Chequer Inn, Ash (a listed building which dates from the 15th Century) and saved it from developers.

The Pub re-opened in July 2019 as a community owned pub, leased to Tenants.

Our aims are:-
• to maintain a place to meet friends and neighbours and improve the sense of community
• to provide a community hub ensuring inclusion for those who are socially excluded, isolated and lonely
• to provide a central point for information on community events and local issues
• to liaise with local organisations and groups to promote activities and charitable fund raising
• to protect and improve the fabric of this heritage building and make it accessible to all
• to create opportunities for employment
• to inject money into the local economy

Ultimately, to restore the Chequer Inn to its original function: a thriving, viable and sustainable village pub.

The recent coronavirus situation causing the cancellation of events and activities has been a very challenging time for all.
Overcoming the issues created by a global pandemic required some new strategies and we worked hard with our Tenants to ensure that we did everything within our power to ‘weather the storm’.

Our popular MeetUpMondays™ were disrupted and this was particularly hard for those who had been enjoying the benefits of the social interaction and building new friendships.

Through the summer of 2021, the large garden allowed some resumption of meetings and enabled customers to enjoy their drinks and food whilst maintaining social distancing, weather permitting!

During the lockdown work on the new disabled toilet was completed and both the drayman’s hatch and the cellar air-conditioning unit were replaced.

The Edwardian Tea Rooms have also been restored and are a useful and valuable addition to the garden.

We now have a lovely Community Garden where vegetables and flowers have been planted and harvested by our team of volunteer community gardeners. A highlight was the Garden Open Day in October where we shared home-grown and home-made Pumpkin Soup and Corn Rolls and also donated garden produce to the Church Harvest Festival.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Unfortunately, our Tenants ceased to trade in January and Liquidators have now been appointed to wind up their company.

The legal issues in relation to this are still to be resolved and at present the pub remains closed. We view this temporary closure as a 'hiatus' and are working hard to ensure this period is kept to a minimum.

So whilst all that is still in progress, we remain focused on our aims as listed above and our objective of improving the sense of community and encouraging activities that bring people together.

Another Open Garden Day is imminent with the added attraction of Bat & Trap! Two of our team have started a walking group in the village and we hope to re-commence the weekly MeetUpMondays™ in the near future.

We are also using this period to canvass ideas from local residents as to what they want from this community hub and how they can help to deliver it.

By choosing us as your 'Good Cause' and buying lottery tickets our vision for this community pub can be achieved.

We are only the custodians of this historic coaching inn but, with your help, we can ensure its future.

Thank you for your support and good luck!

Yours sincerely,

CIAS Committee
