About us

Chequer Inn Ash Society Limited rescued a much-loved heritage building and valuable amenity for the community.

We raised the necessary funds to purchase The Chequer Inn, Ash (a listed building which dates from the 15th Century) and saved it from developers. We found great Tenants to run it and the Pub re-opened in July 2019.

Our aims are:-
• to maintain a place to meet friends and neighbours and improve the sense of community
• to provide a community hub ensuring inclusion for those who are socially excluded, isolated and lonely
• to provide a central point for information on community events and local issues
• to liaise with local organisations and groups to promote activities and charitable fund raising
• to protect and improve the fabric of this heritage building and make it accessible to all
• to create opportunities for employment
• to inject money into the local economy

Ultimately, to restore the Chequer Inn to its original function: a thriving, viable and sustainable village pub.

The recent coronavirus situation forced pubs to close and caused the cancellation of events and activities.
Overcoming the issues created by a global pandemic required some new strategies and we worked hard with our Tenants to ensure that we did everything within our power to ‘weather the storm’.

During the lockdown work on the new disabled toilet was completed and both the draymans hatch and the cellar air-conditioning unit were replaced.

With their focus on re-opening, the tenants worked hard to maximise the asset of the large garden. A new BBQ, tables, parasols and seating on the lawn now enables customers to enjoy their drinks and food whilst maintaining social distancing, weather permitting!

The garden has also enabled 'Meet up Mondays' to resume allowing some much-needed social interaction for those particularly isolated or lonely.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Its challenging times for everyone but now, more than ever, we need your support.

The Chequers has re-opened and slowly but surely the customers will return. As a Society we need to build up our financial reserves again to continue with our plans. Our next project will be to restore the Edwardian Tea Rooms to their former glory and make them a useful and valuable addition to the garden.

By choosing us as your 'Good Cause' and buying lottery tickets our vision for this community pub can be achieved.

We are only the custodians of this historic coaching inn but, with your help, we can ensure its future.

Thank you for your support and good luck!

Yours sincerely,

CIAS Committee
